Celebrating 50 years of Outward Bound and taking a moment to reflect.

Project —

Outward Bound was celebrating an amazing 50 years of operation at Anakiwa. Apart from their website, a newsletter was the key way of getting news to past and present and future school attendees. Typically this was available on their website as a pdf or printed and mailed as a hard copy.

Our approach —

We could see great potential to feature a raft of historic content that the school had on hand. This ranged from old photos to stories from past course goers and news articles about the school.

We upsized the format from A4 to a tabloid, and printed on uncoated crisp white paper. We graded newer photos to appear older, and printed some genuinely older pics we scanned in, (see cover shot above). Overall this created a tactile news-worthy and nostalgic publication.

The centre spread of the first edition had a fantastic mix of old photos from the school at Anakiwa. The edition shown above had a centre spread pull out poster. The poster was designed to show the Sounds, and the iconic cutter sailing boats from Outward Bound and to make the most of the poster we printed the whole edition on a lux uncoated stock. The gorgeous poster was illustrated by Stephen Fuller of Wellington.

The format was used for each edition of the 50th year.
